As you all know from my last post, I'm starting to spin my own yarn! I couldn't bare to look at that skein of Merino anymore (...that one I pictured in my last post). I decided to make two hats out of it. They are both size Newborn photo prop hats. I'm really happy with how they came out, so I wanted to share them here!

I recently decided to learn how to spin my own yarn on a drop spindle!

I am so excited to share one of my first skeins!

HORIZON 4oz. of Hand-painted Merino Top

Spun super bulky, thick & thin on my bottom whorl drop spindle.

55+ yard skein

I think it turned out awesome.

This was my first time spinning this much fiber. I had one trial run before doing this fiber and it consisted of only half as much as this one. My first turned out well but I am even more satisfied with this one. I am still trying to decide whether I will be using this to crochet something for my prop shop or if I will be selling it!

As I mentioned in my last post, my husband and I (well, mostly my hubby!) were working on some wood furniture photography props to add to my Etsy shop. He's finished the first little prop bed and I really wanted to blog about it and show everyone just how adorable it is!

Newborn Baby Photography Prop or Doll Bed
Unfinished.

It is superior in quality. Fully handcrafted by my husband (a Millwork specialist of 7 years) out of the finest select Pine. The entire bed is built seamless. There are no nail holes and no hardware showing, which is exceptional for photographers. This means no trying to hide or clone them out of your photos! The bed weighs under 10lbs. making it portable and very easy to transport if necessary. It is built extremely sturdy and has been tested to withstand up to 50lbs. making it versatile as it could be used for those tiny sleeping newborns as well as much older sitting toddlers! Custom photography props: Featured in an Etsy Treasury!

I remembered today about this really awesome treasury widget you can get from CraftCult.com. I haven't checked it out in a while. I've been featured in 18 treasuries since opening up shop! Most of them are recent. So add that to my list of achievements!

Anyway, I was so excited to see that I've been featured in yet another treasury -and it's all about PINK! They featured my Owl ear flap beanie... one of my favorites :)

So, it's been a while. I've neglected you all for far too long. I just wish I had more time to keep up with everything. I've been very busy focusing all of my energy on my shop, but I'm going to try to get back into the swing of blogging! I want to, I really do.

Let's see. Here's an update! It's been just over a year and four months since I've opened up my Etsy shop and I've hit and surpassed 500 sales (566 -to be exact)! I have 263 shop hearts and I'm very close to 20,000 page views! I'm pretty happy with that, if I do say so myself!

I'm currently working on an expansion. I LOVE making hats but I am also going to be carrying those adorable satin and organza flower clips & headbands (another very popular photography prop) and my husband will join me in making really fabulous furniture photography props. Our aim will be mostly newborn and toddler photographers. We will start a line of beds, benches, boxes and all that jazz! I am incredibly excited to be expanding after only a little over a year! It's so exciting :) You can expect to begin to see some new items within the week. I want to have everything up and running by the end of this month.

In other exciting news, we may be relocating soon. Heading South! I'm not going to jinx it by talking about it, but my husband is in the process of putting in for a transfer and hopefully by summer's end you'll be hearing more!

A new addition to my shop.

I thought It might be nice to let everyone see a small glimpse into the creation of one of my newest items.

This creation all started when I bought this awesome hand spun Tutti Fruitti yarn from Lambsears on Etsy. It's super bright & colorful -- the perfect touch for a Newborn photo prop :)

It arrived super quick. I was so excited to start working with it that I forgot to document the entire process... but hey atleast I have this much to show. Next time, I plan on doing this from start to finish.

and this big beautiful ball of yarn ...... turned into a gorgeous - rainbow of color!

Newborn 0-3 month Cocoon & Beanie Hat photography prop set. Cocoon & Hat have matching scalloped 'fan' edging & adorable wooden flower buttons -both are removable- and simply tied on with a bow of hand spun yarn. What a perfect pair. Just looking at these colors makes me wish I had a little baby & a camera! This set is sure to make Baby's first photos - just perfect!

I promised I'd write about my purchase at JujaCrafts & how much I love it! So here it is, finally.

JujaCrafts is this adorable little Etsy shop that specializes in handmade fabric flower appliques, hair accessories, brooches, shoes clips, etc. etc. and the list goes on. Along with having some of the prettiest flowers & coolest items on Etsy, they have awesome PRICES & great customer service! I contacted them asking if I could change things up & order different colors & they replied back very quickly & set me up with a custom listing all in the same day.

Not only do I love this shop, I ADORE their packaging. This is how my package arrived. Wrapped up in a pretty little box. Gosh! The best things always come in tiny packages :)

This is what I got! Two of the prettiest flower hair pins, one in Fuchsia & one in Cotton Candy Pink! I'm so happy with my purchase, I plan on going back for more very soon. I need one in Black and one in Aqua for Winter.

Some new stuff!

I updated my Etsy shop with a couple new things this past week. Including a Medium sized Cuddle Blanket! It's a must see if you're looking for a new photo prop! It's awesome, if I do say so myself :)

Cuddle Blanket Photo Prop!

Here it is, size Medium in Meadow - a gorgeous blend of Sage, Gold, Cream, and Blue.

Here it is compared to my Original cuddle blanket in size Small in
Sierra - a beautiful blend of rose, tans, and browns.

You can really tell the size difference. My Small (original) design is made for those brand new babies & at just about 20" in diameter - it's the perfect size to cover the surface of whatever your Newborn would be lying on. The Medium size at just about 30" in diameter - is perfect for 0-3 months and up! This would fit very nicely in just about any photo prop basket! I'm so excited to finally have this available in my shop & I can't wait to start working on the next size!

It's been a while...

I feel like I've been seriously neglecting my little blog & my shop this past week.. and I really have been. I've been working a lot at my second job (which I will hopefully be able to leave soon!) It's just taking up all my time & I feel like I don't get anything accomplished. I feel behind & like I'm constantly trying to catch up. Not to mention, my supplier is killing me with not having my buttons in!! That's another story though... so, I'll save that rant for another time haha.

Button Loop Beanie Hat

Size Chart:
0-3 months (Newborn) 12"-13"
3-6 months (Infant) 13"-14"
6-12 months (Infant/Toddler) 16"-17"
12+ months (Toddler/Teen) 18"-19"
Teen/Adult 20"-21"
X Large Adult 24"

Requires:
H hook (5.00mm)
4 (medium worsted) yarn

Abbreviations:
c = chain
st. = stitch
sl. st. = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
dcbp = double crochet back post
bphdc = back post half double crochet
dv st. = double v stitch

Description of stitches:
bphdc - yarn over, put your hook through the (inside of hat) back of the post of the stitch in the row directly below it. yarn over, pull through the first loop (which will be the post). yarn over pull through the remaining 3 loops. (same as hdc) this makes the ridge across your hat.
dv stitch - this is my own made up stitch. You skip the first stitch, dc in the next stitch and then work backwards...and dc in the skipped stitch. you then proceed by skipping the next stitch in line (after your very first dc), dc in the next stitch, and work backwards once again making a dc in the skipped stitch. You will see a V-pattern slowly forming.

Widening your flap:
Attach yarn with a slip stitch to the very first stitch of your flap.
*c1, sc in each st. around and in each of the sts. at the bottom* (this forms a rounded bottom.)
Fasten off, tuck in all ends and sew on your buttons - as shown in the photo.

Another NEW design

So last night I decided to try my hand at something new. I wanted to make something different and BRIGHT! So I decided to use up some of my bright Grape yarn. I wanted to make a beanie but add something different to it - so I started crocheting and got this brilliant idea. So I cut and started sewing and this is what I ended up with:

La Mariposa!

An adorable Spring beanie hat with a plaid butterfly applique!

What do you think?

OK. So it has been done before - but not by me! Haha. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! I'm going to make another design tomorrow - maybe I will do a flower applique this time. I'm not sure just yet. Stay posted and you will see! :)

Just listed 2 brand new Spring designs in my shop. I thought I would dedicate a post to them. I've been working like crazy on creating some new Boy's items, but it's so hard. Boys are hard, they like plain things. Maybe I am just biased because I have a girl and I love making girly things (even if I don't like wearing girly things) haha. I'm not sure, but my shop is seriously lacking in that department. I'm kind of at a loss. I think I need a little inspiration.

The chain scarf is one of the most unique scarf styles I have seen and as of late it has become very popular. I thought it would be nice to design my own and this is the end result. I love it. I think I'm going to make one for myself very soon! This scarf is so versatile, it goes with just about anything. You can dress it up or down - It's chunky but VERY light weight and can be worn throughout the entire year. I also love that it is convertible. You can wear it long as an eternity scarf or wrapped around twice as a cowl or neck warmer. You can wear it with or without the cuff showing. I think I'm going to make a longer version as well for more wearable options.

Happy Thursday!!

I thought today would be a good day to update everyone and post a bit about the newest additions to my shop. I've added the Newborn Cocoon Swaddle Sack! (Which can be seen here.) It's made in this super plush yarn in Sierra. The photo doesn't do it justice at all! It has gorgeous shades of twig, soft rose, and leaf green with honey overtones. It makes me think of a summer garden. It would make a wonderful Spring or Summer photo prop. I definitely can't wait to have it photographed professionally to show off just how pretty it really is!

I've also added my ADORABLE Bunny beanie hat in time for all those Easter photos! It's made is a soft 100% cotton yarn and has these adorable floppy bunny ears attached! I love this hat! I've already received a custom order for 3 of these hats from a photographer, so I will have professional photos of this hat VERY soon! I can't wait to see how well the photos turn out and be able to show it off! In the mean time, check it out here.

I'm excited, this is my very first post on my new blog!

First, let me introduce myself a bit. I'm April, married to my husband Joe for 4 1/2 years now. I'm mommy to a beautiful just-turned-2 little girl named Ryleigh. I live and work out of New York. (well really NY, NJ, & PA) We live right in the tri-state. I love living here! I work retail part time in PA and I run my shop on Etsy from home with the rest of my time.

I'm the shop owner of A. Turner Designs on Etsy. My shop specializes in hand crocheted items for all ages - Newborn to Adult and original designs & patterns for all you crocheters out there! I opened up my shop in October of 09 and am VERY proud to say that just shy of 4 months later - I met 100 sales! I hope to continue growing and succeeding on Etsy in 2010!

I would love to become a stay-at-home mom once again.
